Unlike some of the other old-school betting companies in the UK, William Hill took to the internet age like a duck to water. The turmoil of the late 20th century was forgotten as the brand went from strength to strength and seemed to have consolidated its position in the online marketplace further when it bought Mr Green for £242m in January 2019. However, its long history of independence was about to end. In September 2020, William Hill accepted a takeover bid of £2.9bn from Caesars Entertainment of Nevada, USA. The deal went through in April 2021, but Caesars immediately broke its newly-acquired asset up. It had only ever been interested in the American arm of the business, so the European operations were sold to 888 Holdings for £1.95bn in July 2022.
