All of that changed when the company broke away from Coral and bought eighty bingo clubs across the UK from Thorn EMI for just over £18m in 1983. The latter deal cost £147m, which was an even bigger sum in 1991 than it is now. When the Granada deal concluded, the former Coral-and-Bass branded company rebranded as Gala Clubs.

As Gala, the company bought more and more of its rivals. Seventeen large venues were purchased from Ritz in 1998. Twenty-seven of First Leisure’s Riva Bingo clubs were snapped up in 2000 for £90m. Gala set its sights higher and higher, buying casinos from The Hilton Group in 2000 and then selling off equity in the business to attract further investment. By August 2005, Gala was valued at £1.89bn. What followed was the ultimate series of dog-eat-dog moves. Gala bought Coral out from underneath in October 2005 for £2.18bn and changed the name of the business to the Gala Coral Group. At the time, it was the largest bingo operator in the UK and the third-largest bookmaker overall.

Ten years later, Gala Coral was bought by Coral’s long-time rival Ladbrokes, but Ladbrokes didn’t want the bingo clubs.
