How to check a UK gambling licence

A British gambling licence should be checked against the casino’s exact domain and legal operator, not merely a familiar logo or a licence number copied from another website.

Start with the casino website

Open the terms, footer or regulatory information and note the legal company name, licence account number and exact domain. If the company name in the terms differs from the marketing brand, keep both names.

Search the official register

Use the UK Gambling Commission business register. Search the account number first when one is provided, then confirm the legal company. A company may hold several licence activities, so check that remote casino, bingo or betting activity is active as appropriate.

Check the domain status

  • Active means the domain is currently listed directly on that account.
  • White Label means the domain is currently licensed through the account as a white-label site.
  • Inactive means the domain should not be treated as a current UK brand on that account.

An inactive domain on one account may appear as active or white label on another. We therefore search the exact domain across the register before describing a brand as closed.

Check trading names separately

A trading name helps connect a consumer brand to a company, but the domain record is normally the stronger check for a website. Similar names, hyphens and suffixes can cause missed matches: BetUK may appear as Bet UK, betuk.com or another close variant.

Read the regulatory history

The account page shows current regulatory actions retained on the public register. Older official enforcement notices may still be relevant even after they stop appearing in that summary. We state the date, amount and type of failure rather than saying an operator is simply clean or unsafe.

What a licence does not prove

A licence confirms regulatory permission; it does not guarantee a good bonus, fast withdrawal or identical service across sister sites. White-label brands can have different commercial owners, terms and customer-support arrangements even when the licence account is shared.
